I have been so proud of how Trinidad and Tobago collectively handled the sad news that Thema Williams would no longer represent us at Rio Olympic Games 2016. In the many emotions displayed, the prevailing thread was hurt.
Red; our national colour and also the colour of our blood – symbolises our solidarity but also our national consciousness, being pained into reaction. It was like we’d all been cut open. Maybe it’s because we have all, at some point, felt the sting of injustice and we had all just had enough.
We reacted to the removal of Thema by lifting her in our esteem…encouraging her and fighting on her behalf. We stood as a nation, to stamp out ‘nepotism’. We are ‘becoming…a nation’.
